Earthquake in the Indian State of Gujarat

A severe earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred near Bhuj in the Indian State of Gujarat. Tremors caused by this earthquake were felt in most areas throughout the country. Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) is the nearest nuclear power station to the epicentre of this earthquake. On January 26, 2001 both the units of KAPS were operating at a power level of 220 MWe each, prior to the occurrence of earthquake. Tremors were felt at KAPS at around 08:50 hrs. Both the units of KAPS continued to operate at 220 MWe each after the seismic activity. A detailed survey of the different areas like the reactor building, service building, pump houses, switchyard areas, cooling towers (NDCT & IDCT) was carried out in both the units.
No damage was observed to any of the civil structures, pipes & pipe supports, cable trays and physical barriers provided for safety related equipment. All the plant systems including safety systems continued to function normally. All the three channels of the seismic trip which are designed to trip the reactors automatically in case of a major earthquake were tested and confirmed to be operating satisfactorily.
The other nuclear power stations at Rawatbhatta, Tarapur, Narora, Kalpakkam and Kaiga also recorded the seismic activity but no damage took place at any of these nuclear power plants also.
The incident is rated at level 0 on INES.
