On the day of the incident NAPS unit 1 was operating at 220 MWe. Unit-2 was under cold shutdown.. At 0808 hrs, unit-1 was brought to cold shutdown as make up water to the station became unavailable due to failure of the Sluice Gate at Ganga Barage. Uncontrolled flow of water from the damaged Sluice Gate, caused lowering of water level below NAPS intake channel which is upstream of Ganga River. Sluice gate repair work is in progress. Presently the station make up water requirements are being met by supply from tube wells. The event has been rated at level 0 on INES as all the safety functions were fully available.
