CRACKS IN PUMP AND VALVE CASINGS

There is no fuel in the reactor, the reactor pressure vessel is open and empty. During the ongoing surveillance, cracks were detected inside the casings of some main circulation pumps and their connecting valves. The cracks probably existed since the time of manufacturing, though propagation during operation cannot be excluded.
The material is cast stainles steel. The depth of the deepest crack is 14 mm and has been grinded off. The remaining wall thickness 50 mm, provides satisfactory strength. The examination of all relevant pump and valve casings in Oskarshamn 1 continues.
In the first instance the pumps and valves in four other BWRs of similar type with external circulation loops will be inspected.
The general public is not affected at all. INES level 0.
