On 11 August 1994, approximately 3 litres of a solution containing 11 mg/l of plutionim spilled over a sample containment and spread on the floor of a room of the Medium Activity Plutonium Workshop (MAPu). In this workshop, plutonium oxide, which is etracted from irradiated fuel, is purified and conditioned. This overflow took place following a sampling from a hold-up tank for flushing effluents and was caused by an excessive flow of the pump that is used for feeding the sampling circuit. No persons were present in the workshop. The area is presently being cleaned. Due to the loss of a protective barrier, this incident, which had no effects on personnel or the environment, has been classified as level 1 of the International Nuclear Event Scale.
