The European Community (EC) is conducting research on the decommissioning
of nuclear installations with the prime objective of developing effective techniques
and procedures to ensure the protection of man and his environment against the
potential hazards of nuclear installations that have been finally shut down.
This book contains the results of the 1984-1988 five-year programme of research
on the decommissioning of nuclear power plants which were presented at the
International Conference on the Decommissioning of Nuclear Installations, held
at the Palais des Congres, Brussels, Belgium, 24-27 October 1989. The programme
extended to all types of installations of the nuclear fuel cycle and produced numerous
scientific and technical achievements, some of which have already been tested on an
industrial scale. Great progress has in particular been achieved in the reduction of
metal waste arising from decommissioning, due to advances in areas such as
aggressive decontamination procedures and techniques for melting and recycling
low-level radioactive waste metal.
Decommissioning of Nuclear Installations will be of specific interest to those in
the nuclear, reliability, safety, mechanical and structural engineering industries.
