GENERAL PROGRESS AND OVERVIEW T Boorman, Windscale Laboratory This is the first WAGR Newsletter to he issued since the launch of AEA Technology- the new name under which the UKAEA is marketing its contract R&D services. The new name stands- as indeed did the 'old' one- for the quality and broad range of engineering and scientific expertise that the AEA can bring to hear in problem solving. The WAGR project is a good example of a project requiring this multi- disciplined approach. In carrying it out we don't think of it only as being done by the Windscale Laboratory. This is an AEA job being managed from Windscale. In this issue of the Newsletter you will find information on the progress of the project on several fronts from the provision of the necessary remote handling technology, day-to-day progress, associated R&D work, some full-scale decontamination, and proposals to develop practical volume reduction by melting. Each one of these topics is substantial and the descriptions given can only represent a summary of the work carried out and the problems solved. Indeed it is the job of this Newsletter to give a 'snap-shot' of the progress of the several aspects of the WAGR project. More detailed information is being accumulated all the time, of course, as procedures and tools are put to the test.
