FOREWORD
A fresh worldwide debate about nuclear energy has been rekindled after decades
of silent ageing of the nuclear industry. The insatiable energy hunger of the fast
growing economies of the East like China and India, rising oil prices, uncertainties
about the quantity ("peak oil") and security of energy supplies, and the run-away
climate change are used as strong arguments for this type of energy resource. The
nuclear industry sees a new morning, nuclear energy seems to be on the way back.
But there seems to be more hype than facts to this "nuclear renaissance". The
percentage of electricity generated from nuclear power is quickly shrinking instead.
Even the very few new power plants currently under construction in Asia and one
in Europe (Finland) cannot stem the tide. The industry itself is reluctant to commit
its financial muscles to this revival and instead calls for state subsidies and market
guaranties, before even considering entering into this risky business field. The final
deposition of nuclear wastes is still a major Achilles heel of this technology.
These dramatic changes in the way energy is generated and the media offensive
of the pro-nuclear lobby are reasons enough to take a closer look again at nuclear
energy.
