Since the September 1985 revision there have been two notable events affecting 
nuclear power in Britain. In April1986 there was a serious accident at, and a major 
release of radioactivity from, a Russian nuclear station at Chernobyl. The main 
purpose of this supplement is to present questions and answers on this event.

In March 1987 the Government gave its formal consent to the construction of the 
Sizewell 'B' pressurised water reactor (PWR). This will be the subject of a later set 
of questions and answers but in the meantime the following extracts are from the 
Secretary of State for Energy's letter of consent. The Inspector to which he refers is 
Sir Frank Layfield QC who had been responsible for, and had just reported on, the 
planning Inquiry into the CEGB's Sizewell 'B' proposal:

"I accept the Inspector's conclusion that building Sizewell 'B' is likely to be a 
lower cost option to meet capacity need than a new AGR or a new coal-fired power 
station .... I also agree with the Inspector's conclusion that the building of 
Sizewell 'B' is an advantageous course for the CEGB to take in carrying out its 
statutory duty to provide an economical and secure supply of electricity ....

Having carefully considered the Inspector's assessment of the safety of Sizewell 'B' 
I conclude that, if built, it would be acceptably safe."

The Secretary of State also reported the advice he had received from HM Chief 
Inspector of Nuclear Installations that the Chernobyl accident did not call for any 
reconsideration of the conclusion or recommendations in the Sizewell Inspector's 
Report.
