FOOD IRRADIATION TECHNOLOGY A BOON OR HAZARD TO HUMAN HEALTH? by Kitty Tucker SUMMARY Food irradiation is a technology in which food is passed through a beam of ionizing radiation, from radioactive or machine sources, to inhibit sprouting or to sterilize or kill insects and other microorganisms present on food. Although the technology is legal for certain food items in around 30 countries, the process is not yet in widespread use. Promoters of the process include the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), current radiation sterilisation companies, and various governmental bodies. The IAEA formed an expert committee which involved the Food and Agricultural Organisation, and the World Health Organisation, and which issued a report approving food irradiation. Opposition to the process was launched by consumer, health, and environmental organisations. The Health and Energy Institute in the United States was instrumental In launching both American and international concern over health and environmental problems associated with the process. Opponents now include local and state bodies in the USA and the European Parliament.
