Dear Friends ...

We first became conscious of the controversy over nuclear power when Northeast
Utilities (NU) chose our home town of Montague, Massachusetts as the site for
two huge atomic reactors- ( at the time) the biggest in the world.
At first we thought the plan was some sort of surreal dream, something that
couldn't happen in a small, quiet community like ours.
But as the company wined and dined the town fathers and made outlandish
promises of tax cuts, jobs and business breaks to come, it became clear that
the atomic proposal was very, very real.
And as if to prove the inevitability of their plan, NU built a 500-foot weather tower
at the site. Its purpose was to check wind speed and direction so we'd know which
way to evacuate in case of an accident at the plant. But the tower's flashing strobe-
light also served as a constant reminder of the idea that "you can't fight city hall."
Indeed, the more we learned about nuclear power the more intrigued-and then
incensed-we became. As filmmakers we were looking for objective information.
But in reviewing countless documentaries from the government, we were amazed
to find that the presentation was entirely one-sided. The safety and benefits of
nuclear fission were assumed. The only material available was actually pro-nuclear
propaganda, spread free by the government and industry through classrooms and
the media for over three decades.
There were, however, those who disagreed with the official view.
