British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) is the most experienced supplier of nuclear fuel cycle services in the world. BNFL’s activities span the whole range of nuclear fuel cycle services. It has some 40 years' experience of fuel manufacture and has now fabricated more fuel than any other commercial company, meeting the requirements of a wide variety of reactors using both natural uranium and uranium oxide fuels. BNFL has supplied hex conversion services on a commercial basis since 1968, regularly delivering hex to each of the world's enrichment plants. Enrichment using the gas centrifuge process developed in conjunction with BNFL’s partners in the Netherlands and West Germany, enables BNFL’s associate company, Urenco to provide the world's most economic enrichment service BNFL, and its predecessors, have been reprocessing and recycling nuclear fuel and managing the waste products for over 30 years and have reprocessed over 25,000 tU spent fuel-more than any other commercial organisation in the world. Sellafield, BNFL’s reprocessing facility in West Cumbria has been mostly concerned to date with reprocessing irradiated Magnox fuel both from the UK and overseas but has also gained experience in reprocessing oxide fuels used in Light Water Reactors and Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors. The Company and its predecessors experience includes design, construction and operation of two commercial thermal reprocessing plants as well as design and construction of a further two for fast reactor fuel and of the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant now under construction. BNFL’s current investment programme over the next 10 years is worth some £3,700 million, of which about £2,500 million is dedicated to reprocessing and waste management plant at Sellafield. The Fuel Handling Plant and Site Ion Exchange Effluent Plant which both started operation in 1985 are just two of the many new plants which are making Sellafield one of the largest construction sites in Europe today. BNFL’s largest project is the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP) for the reprocessing of oxide fuel from Britain and overseas. A full order book has already been obtained for the first 10 years of THORP operations. In total 28 utilities in eight overseas countries and the two domestic UK utilities have signed contracts to have their irradiated fuel reprocessed in THORP. BNFL is currently marketing business for the second 10 years of THORP operations.
