SUMMARY
This report focuses on the criteria necessary for the sustainable development of
uranium mining and processing operations in the context of the four cornerstones
of sustainable development, namely:
—Environment;
—Social issues;
—Economics, and;
—Governance.
The criteria for ensuring sustainable development within each of these four areas
is outlined, and the subject of legacy issues and timescales over which an industry
should be considered sustainable are discussed.
A sustainable industry is one that balances environmental, social and economic
requirements. Concentration on only one aspect is certain to cause conflict with
the others. For example, focusing exclusively on environmental protection can make
an operation unprofitable and a failing business will lose shareholders and be
unable to develop and meet its social obligations. However, the emphasis on
particular aspects will vary with the specific operation and its local physical
and social environment. Proper governance will have in place the structures
required to permit achievement of an appropriate balance.
As the world’s population continues to grow at a rapid rate, so too does the
demand for electricity. Nuclear power has for the past two decades generated
approximately 15–16% of the global electricity supply, and is seen as an
attractive potential alternative to fossil fuels.
Uranium is the basic raw material for manufacturing nuclear fuel. Therefore, to
fuel currently operating and forthcoming nuclear power reactors it is fundamental
to ensure a sustainable supply of uranium.
