FOREWORD TO THE AMERICAN EDITION Thanks to the kindly assistance of the US publisher and the American Nuclear Society, my book will be available for a wide circle of American readers. I would like to express my gratitude to Vladimir Shmelev, the Scientific Editor of the translation from Russian into English, and to Margaret Leverich, who edited the manuscript. This is the second edition, published in the Soviet Union in 1972 (the first edition was published in 1970). To my pleasure, the book was well received by readers and found a broad response in a number of countries. Certainly this is explained not by literary merits of the book but by the fact that the book more or less systematically and consecutively expounds the achievements of Soviet scientists and specialists in the Held of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Quite recently the Soviet Union celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. During these 50 years the USSR grew into one of the largest industrial states of the world. As to its technological equipment and industrial power the USSR has left behind such advanced countries as Great Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Japan and others. The USSR occupies, in this respect, second place immediately after the US. Our country in the years after the second world war took a quick step forward also in the field of nuclear science and technology. I was fated to take part in the foundation of the Soviet atomic industry. Through my education and past work experience, I am a mechanical engineer, and I was far from the main road of nuclear physics. But, as our ancient proverb says, " … after long years of work even a hare might be taught to strike matches." So I succeeded for a quarter of a century in going deep into this most interesting branch of scientific knowledge and industrial application and in making a certain contribution to it.
