This is how we manage Sweden's radioactive waste (1998)

The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, SKB, has now existed 
for 25 years. During this span of time the company's activities have developed, 
deepened and changed.
The initial period was a building-up phase during which methods and approaches 
were gradually worked out and an organization began to take shape. This was 
followed by a period of consolidation, theory formation, engineering and operation. 
We built the facilities in Oskarshamn for interim storage of spent nuclear fuel and 
in Forsmark for the final disposal of operational waste. A transportation system was 
developed to carry the waste from the nuclear power reactors to the storage and 
disposal facilities.
At the same time, a high level of competence was built up in conducting research 
and contracting out research within various fields such as nuclear technology, 
geology, chemistry, physics, etc. This competence was, and still is, the very 
foundation of our activities. It also included knowledge and expertise vital for 
designing and building the facilities and engaging contractors. Gradually, the 
company also added functions required for the future work. Information and 
Public Affairs, for example, assumed an increasingly prominent role.
Today we can say, as my predecessor said one year ago, that management and 
disposal of radioactive waste products at SKB's facilities is proceeding satisfactorily.
Today we also have a method for final disposal of the spent nuclear fuel in a deep 
repository, where the fuel will be isolated and contained behind a number of harriers. 
It will be encapsulated and deposited in a tunnel system at a depth of 500 metres in 
stable rock. We have gradually managed to solve the various technical problems 
involved in this method. Some development work remains to be done, but we are 
confident that our method is reliable and safe for human beings and the environment.
