One of SKB's tasks is to compile the basis for the siting of a deep repository for
Swedish spent nuclear fuel and other long-lived nuclear waste.

In the government decision of May 18, 1995, the government made the following
statement: "The Government finds, in agreement with most of the reviewing bodies,
that SKB ought to present its general studies and site-specific feasibility studies
collectively for the purpose of providing background and premises in the siting
work. The Government believes that such collective accounts ought to be presented
in future research and development programmes in accordance with Section 12 of
the Act on Nuclear Activities."

General Siting Study 95 is a detailed description of the work carried out to put the
siting of a deep repository in a national and regional context. The report is based on
SKB 's siting factors, which have been applied on a national scale. Different factors
of importance or of possible importance for the long-term radiological safety,
technology, land and environment as well as society are described and evaluated.

This report is the overall description on general siting studies which the government
considered that SKB should report in connection with RD&D Programme 95.
