BACKGROUND

Nuclear electricity generation produces radioactive waste materials which must be 
disposed of in a safe and economical way. Some of the wastes contain species with 
very long half-lives and therefore have to be isolated from man and his environment 
for time periods of several thousands of years into the future. Most countries with 
nuclear power are considering disposal of these wastes deep under ground in stable 
geological formations.

Crystalline formations provide more than adequate shielding against radiation and 
will also absorb and disperse the heat produced by the waste. Deep underground 
disposal in a formation with no valuable minerals also makes future intrusion by 
man very unlikely. Geological disposal is an entirely passive system which does 
not depend on human involvement to ensure the safety over very long periods of 
time. No hazard to man or the environment will occur while the waste remains 
contained in an appropriately-sited repository.

During the long periods for which the wastes remain radioactive, the possibility of 
the release of radionuclides from the repository and their transport to the biosphere 
must be assessed. The only probable release mechanism is dissolution and transport 
in flowing groundwater. Extensive studies of the groundwater-rock-engineered 
barrier interactions therefore have to be undertaken.

Development of methods and techniques for such studies as well as verification of 
previously obtained laboratory results by in-situ experiments are the general 
objectives of the STRIP A PROJECT, currently in progress in an abandoned iron 
ore mine located in central Sweden.

The Stripa mine is only a research facility and there is no intention to store any 
radioactive material at the mine.
