Introduction An abundance of hydro power resources early made Sweden one of the most electrified countries in the world. As easily exploitable hydro power reserves grew scarce, and in order to maintain low cost electricity production potentially based on indigenous resources, Sweden has embarked on an ambitious nuclear power program. Today Sweden is the most nuclear power intensive country in the world on a per capita basis. Nuclear power accounts for some 40 percent of the Swedish electricity supply. The nuclear share is likely to increase to around 45 percent within the next 2-3 years. In the 1970's Sweden experienced a rather heated nuclear debate but contrary to what has been the case in several other countries it never became militant. The debate culminated in a nuclear referendum in March 1980, resulting in a vast majority in favour of the completion of the planned nuclear power program.
