Executive Summary Site licenses and planning to construct eight new nuclear power stations generating 16GW of electricity for the UK is moving apace. Especially now, post Fukushima, in light of recent gloomy forecasts of economic growth, government’s duty is to ensure that taxpayers funds are wisely managed. One of DECC’s many charges is to ensure that investments made in energy transmission and supply are planned strategically for the long term, are future proofed and then carefully executed. To achieve economic success in infrastructural investment, the UK energy policy must move closer to distributed energy resources, renewable energy generation and gas fired plants for base load generation, moving away from any investment in new nuclear power stations. As Walt Patterson wrote “Replacing centralized with diverse and dispersed distributed generation on a system enhances rather than undermines its stability1 But how are we going to finance the billions required to upgrade our system of energy generation and delivery? This paper identifies the taxpayer’s current investment in the nuclear industry, most of which is unlikely to be commonly known, and then looks at the alternative.
