And Britain's Tory government is planning the rapid expansion of its nuclear power programme, at enormous cost and amid growing reports of reactor failures, nuclear 'incidents', leakages, and control problems. This pamphlet first sets out the facts about nuclear power. What it is, how it was developed, just how dangerous it is, what is the industry's safety record, what the alternatives are. It also asks why nuclear power? What influence the military demand for nuclear weapons has had, how far the search for commercial profits has led the way. Both Labour and Tory governments have argued that nuclear power is an economic necessity. This pamphlet will argue that, on the contrary, they choose nuclear power for strong political reasons, while the economics of the operation are nonsense. It will argue that nuclear expansion means the further centralisation of power in our society, with erosion of civil liberties and workers' rights. And it calls for a strong, active anti-nuclear campaign involving the trade unions, as the only way to stop the nuclear threat.
