Introduction

The scope of this report is to describe the effluent disposal connected with the
reactor, designed for the Institute for the Application of Atomic Energy in
Agriculture at Wageningen.

This report is an exerpt from the "Summary Report on the Hazards of the ITAL
Reactor", prepared by Reactor Centre Netherlands for the Commission for
Atomic Energy. The latter report gives a complete description of the reactor
and its safety. Analysis of the possible accidents shows that the reactor presents
no significant danger to its surroundings. A comparison of normal waste from
reactor operation with waste to be produced by the chemistry building, which is
the main building on the site, shows, that operation of the reactor offers no
problem from this point of view.

There are five possible sources which eventually may result in radioactive
materials leaving the reactor building and auxiliary building. These are:
a. Irradiated materials.
b. Ventilation air.
c. Demineralizer resin.
d. Drains.
e. Fuel elements.

All sources mentioned above will be checked continually for radioactivity and
controlled in such a way that no hazard will exist for operating personnel and
surroundings.

In this summary report, the consequences originating from the effluent disposal
connected with the radioactive materials mentioned above will be discussed.
