Preface

In 1986, I wrote the first edition of this manual. At that time, information on 
the health effects of radiation was available but hidden from the public eye and 
certainly not available in the main stream media. One had to look in grassroots 
tabloids and self-published books and articles. When I was invited to lecture on 
how to protect oneself from radiation, very few people attended the lecture, as if 
they did not know, did not believe or did not care much about radiation as a topic 
of health. There were virtually no books available on natural methods of radiation 
protection. The following year, there was a virtual explosion of information on 
radiation, its effects, the cover-up of its effects by the radiation industry, and - 
four new books on radiation protection.
Since then, radiation - what it is, what it does, and what to do about it - has 
become a "hot topic" if you'll pardon the pun. We've gone from looking the 
other way, through denial, the "oops stage", sheepish admission of the hazards 
and the damage, to the "now what" stage.
I wrote this book not as a technical treatise but to offer the lay public a practical 
way of dealing with the radiation problem. I have touched only the surface of 
what radiation is and what it does. I leave the technical details to the many books 
and scientific papers now available, which I have referenced for those with a 
deeper interest. So don't expect this book to prove to you that radiation is a 
problem. I have merely described today's conditions as I see them.
