Preface The rapid developments in the last few decades of the utilization of atomic energy and other applications of nuclear physics has brought into prominence the need for a better understanding of the action of ionizing radiations on living things. This is necessary not only to protect the present and future population against their harmful effects but also to enable the valuable properties of ionizing radiations to be efficiently and fully exploited. In addition, radiobiology is making a growing contribution to basic knowledge in the life sciences, and ionizing radiations have proved to be a useful tool with which to explore the structure and function of animals and plants. This booklet is intended to provide an introduction to some of the basic principles of radiobiology considered from this point of view. Wantage, 1971 C.W.L.
