European Centre on Pacific Issues: 1992 – 1999 Introduction In the 1980s, peace, environmental and development issues in the Pacific became the subject of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and church organisations in France, Germany, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland. These organisations combined forces in the Europe Pacific Solidarity (EPS) network. Since 1989 the Europe Pacific Solidarity network has organised annual seminars at which activists of the network meet and discuss campaigns on Pacific issues they are involved in. In 1992 the network started the European Centre on Pacific Issues (ECSIEP). The main objective for the establishment of ECSIEP was to give support to the variety of small groups and big organisations in Europe active on Pacific issues. Support was mainly given through the supply of information via the EPS-Bulletin and the organisation of the annual EPS-seminars. Through ECSIEP and its contacts in Europe and the Pacific, continuity was brought into the European Pacific work. ECSIEP maintains regular contact with churches and NGOs in the Pacific and supports their campaigns and activities. Furthermore, ECSIEP supports and develops educational projects with the NGOs and church organisations which participate in the Europe Pacific Solidarity network. The information and networking activities are still the 'core-business' of ECSIEP. However, ECSIEP has developed a number of additional projects with NGOs and churches in the Pacific and Europe. Activities of the ECSIEP office have, in the past, been summarised in the reports which resulted from the annual seminars. However, to get a good overview of the activities that were carried out by ECSIEP in the past seven years, it was thought that the publication of an overall 'seven-year' report would give the best insight.
