POLITICAL ECOLOGY RESEARCH GROUP WINDSCALE INQUIRY 1977 Proof of Evidence - Part 1 : Gordon R Thompson 16 September 1977 1. Description of Witness. I hold the degrees B.Sc, B E ( Mechanical Engineering ) and D Phil. I have worked on the design of coal power stations and have conducted research on nuclear fusion power, with support from the UK Atomic Energy Authority. I am now a freelance engineer with a special interest in natural energy systems and resource conservation. I have no direct experience in safety analysis or reprocessing, although, like most of us, I have learned a good deal during the course of this Inquiry. 2. Nature of Evidence. Part 1 of my evidence concerns the terms of reference of an accident analysis for THORP. I shall outline the form which an accident analysis might have taken and compare this with information provided by BNFL and others. Part 2 of my evidence will concern some details or some accident sequences at Windscale and their consequences. Further information is awaited before this part can be prepared.
