1. Introduction

The documentation centre on nuclear energy was established in 1981, out of the
anti-nuclear power movement. In the beginning the cellar of one of the founders
was used for the collection of all kind of material on nuclear energy. In 1988 the
archive became institutionalized as LAKA Foundation (documentation- and
research-centre on nuclear energy and the resistance against it).

Slowly, the collective expanded in staffmembers as well as in material. In 1990
the documentation center moved to the center of Amsterdam.
The importance and the role of the documentation center has enormously increased
since the move to Amsterdam. In 1994 it had to move again to a bigger office.

There is no comparable organization in the Netherlands (and to some extent in the
surrounding countries) which aim it is to collect information about nuclear energy
in such a systematic way, and by doing so make it accessible for all.
